La hora en Funchal, Portugal (GMT).

Located in the centre of Machico the Forum Machico centre, plays an important role in the local culture life.

The design of this cultural centre shows concern for landscape integration in an urban context of this municipality.
The building houses an auditorium with capacity for 283 seated audience members, two cinema screens, conference rooms, a library, a restaurant, shops and a car park.

Interesting areas around Machico Bay to Pico do Facho, near the small harbour, and Ponta de São Loureço. In the centre is the seafront promenade along the beautiful beach of Banda d’Além and ‘Praia de S. Roque’ pebble beach and pier. Many special events like the Medieval Market in June and the Gastronomic Fair in late July, take place each year in the beautiful surroundings of the ancient fortress of ‘Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo’ and promenade.

You can enjoy beautiful views of the Promenade along the lovely pebble beach ‘Praia de S. Roque’ and pier. The golden sandy beach ‘Praia da Banda d’Além’, a close-up of Pico do Facho and Fort of São João Baptista (being transformed into a hotel) next to the marina, including close-ups of Desertas Islands and Ponta de São Lourenço.

Moving back to the centre of the city is the ancient triangular shaped fortress ‘Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo’ built in 17th century to defend the Machico beach. This area around the fortress and promenade is where many of the events take place, such as the popular MIUT finish line, the famous historic medieval market (Mercado Quinhentista) every year in June, and the Machico Gastronomic Fair in the summer.

A children’s park and the Municipal Gardens can also be seen here and to the right is Hotel Dom Pedro, São Roque Chapel and a close-up towards the viewpoint Miradouro Francisco Alvares Nóbrega.

Forum Machico

« MACHICO »

From the historic point of view this is probably the most interesting town on the island, as Machico was the landing point of the discoverers of Madeira.

This peculiar corner of the island boasts Madeira’s oldest church, the ‘Capela dos Milagres’, and two forts still bear witness of the locals’ defence against the many pirate attacks on the village.

Machico has a wonderful beach and good facilities for both swimming and sunbathing.
This tranquil town boasts some excellent guesthouses and restaurants, and is a good starting point for a number of nice ‘levada’ walks.

The banks of Machico’s river are covered with lush vegetation and spotted with whitewashed houses. Apart from the parochial church, there is the small chapel of São Roque on the quay, built in the 16th century, with an interesting exhibition of blue and white tiles telling about the saint’s life.

The municipality of Machico, which comprises five parishes (Água de Pena, Caniçal, Machico, Porto da Cruz and Santo António da Serra), lives from agriculture and fishing. The fishing harbours are located in Machico and Caniçal, where the fishing fleet’s catch consists mainly of tuna and ‘gaiado’ (regional fish to be dried).

Porto da Cruz parish is famous for its vine cultivation, and every year there is a celebration called ‘Vintage Party’.
